What Does Jumio Offer?

Jumio is a comprehensive identity verification software provided and offers a complete end-to-end solution, dubbed the KYX Platform.

On offer is active liveness and biometric verification to match a person’s identity to the document they submitted as part of an onboarding process. Jumio can also check the validity of official documents, such as a driver’s license.

Depending on the package you decide to choose, businesses can make use of human review for higher levels of assurance from their team of experts.

Furthermore, Jumio leverages machine learning to screen and monitor potential fraudulent activities, and users can receive alerts either by email or on its platform. This includes global/regional sanctions, watchlists, and PEP data. From there, you can create cases for analysts to investigate further.

Why Look for a Jumio Alternative?

Jumio was one of the first companies to really show the value of online ID verification through biometrics. However, with the technology available today, this isn’t always necessity, and it also adds a lot of friction to the user journey.

From false positives to repeated attempts due to bad lighting, customer churn can quickly become an issue with video ID verification. In consideration of the fast-paced nature of digital services, users prefer (if not demand) a low-friction onboarding process.

As well as this, while the manual review by Jumio personnel does add an extra layer of trust, it can also lead to delays in verification and human error inconsistencies. Not everyone is happy to be speaking to someone they don’t know on video call, either.

Finally, smaller businesses may find Jumio pricing out of reach and/or some of the solutions unnecessary. Although it does offer individual integrations, you might find a cheaper alternative elsewhere.

Six Jumio Alternatives

Understanding your areas that need bolstering or updating is vital when searching for any alternative solutions but we’ve tried to cover a range of areas within risk management within this list, given the nature of Jumio’s product portfolio.

SEON

SEON is a fraud detection and prevention company that supports a range of industries faced with problems such as:

  • payment fraud
  • account takeovers
  • fake accounts
  • friendly fraud
  • chargebacks

Its unique data enrichment tool takes information taken at the sign-up and onboarding stage to verify a person’s identity through innovative digital footprint analysis.

With one click, the tool aggregates open, public data to uncover a complete picture of users’ digital footprint and the social and web data linked with it.

This has several use cases. For example, in certain regions banking data might be hard to access, so customers are caught in a catch-22 in terms of access to banking and lending. SEON can help flag suspicious users by the number of online platforms the submitted email address/phone number is signed up to. It can also reveal direct links and when they were last active on such platforms – thus providing an alternative method to assess whether a user could be a fraudster.

This all feeds into an overall risk score that, based on either preset or customer rules, can be used as one part of customer due diligence.

As well as this, SEON offers a complete end-to-end solution with flexible features to fit the way you do business. Whitebox machine learning offers businesses complete transparency on why a decision is made, supported by solutions such as device fingerprinting, IP analysis, and behavior analysis. See a side-by-side comparison of each here.

Onfido

Onfido is another IDV specialist that can analyze over 2,500 kinds of forms of IDs from 195 countries. Used by the likes of Revolut, bunq, and Bitstamp, Onfido looks to help businesses verify users by both video and document verification.

Its biometric analysis combines video verification with the submitted document, which is then processed by machine learning to reach a decision. This can also be fed through to manual review.

Because of the nature of biometric verification, which is similar to that provided by Jumio, smaller business owners and startups might find that the costs are too high.

It’s worth noting that Onfido does not offer any kind of AML solution or transaction screening; it’s purely a biometric verification solution.

According to the official website, the firm states that one of its customers saved an estimated 3,165 hours of manual processing over a 6 month period after changing from Jumio.

Ekata

Acquired by Mastercard in 2021 for the sum of $850m, Ekata is one solution that does offer AML screening services.

Through a combination of two technologies (the Identity Graph and the Identity Network), the firm supports businesses in verifying honest users when faced with digital interactions.

The Identity Graph is a third-party data source with over two billion confirmed identities and can validate important identity elements such as:

  • name
  • email
  • phone
  • IP
  • physical address

Through graph visualization, users can see connections between these data points to help confirm a user’s identity.

Ekata’s own Identity Network is built on hashed identity elements, with five billion digital interactions and behavioral patterns to support decision making

The two data assets are combined and fed through advanced machine learning models, which also help build the rules that ultimately accept or deny transactions.

Finally, Pro Insight is the company’s manual review product where Ekata’s own agents investigate certain elements of the transaction on the customer’s behalf.

LexisNexis

LexisNexis is a widely known risk solution provider that has acquired numerous companies which are now part of its portfolio, including Emailage and ThreatMetrix

LexisNexis offers a complete end-to-end solution as well as individual components, although it’s worth noting that the company has limited integration with other products outside of its portfolio.

Fraud Intelligence, the overriding product, is broken down into three key offerings. Businesses can pick the solutions most suited for their needs.

These are:

  1. Fraud Intelligence Bankcard Score: suitable for banks/financial institutions, bank card issuers, money service businesses, and auto lenders
  2. Fraud Intelligence Retail Score: handy for retail card issuers
  3. Fraud Intelligence Wireless Score: made for telecom, wireless and utilities firms (including phone providers)

As mentioned above, two components of LexisNexis include Emailage and ThreatMetrix.

Emailage is an intelligence solution that analyzes data such as domain details, email details, risk indicators, and other personally identifiable information to provide a risk score based purely on the submitted email address.

ThreatMetrix is a device intelligence solution that supports the wider LexID Digital product through behavioral biometrics, which help spot suspicious activity such as bots, potential bot attacks and scripts. LexID offers tokenized customer identifiers by combining online and offline identity attributes.

It’s worth noting that much of LexisNexis’s information does not utilize real-time sources. Yes, it is holding over a decade’s worth of data, but this can become stale and work to the detriment of accuracy.

Trulioo

Trulioo is another identity verification solution that offers document verification and liveness checks as well as AML screening.

This company was founded in 2011 and its electronic identity verification solution supports a range of international electronic identity verification requirements through a combination of document verification and databases.

Data comes from its marketplace of global identity networks, dubbed the GlobalGateway. The GlobalGateway Identity Verification platform integrates via a single API, which boasts data from more than 5 billion people and 300 million companies (for its business verification solution).

Trulioo can authenticate 11,800 different types of identity documents globally to help with due diligence. They also offer access to a global AML watchlist that covers sanction lists, law enforcement lists, and governing regulatory bodies.

Shufti Pro

Based in London and launched in 2012, Shufti Pro is a digital identity verification solutions provider offering KYC, KYB, and AML tools & software services in more than 200 countries and territories.

On-premise deployment is available with 17 different IDV products available in the company’s portfolio, including facial recognition, liveness detection, and anti-spoofing techniques. They are able to verify ID documents globally, in 150+ languages.

AI-powered AML screening collects user information to confirm their identity when making transactions and can be matched up with AML watchlist to flag high-risk identities. This screening process works with over 1700 criminal watchlists, sanction lists, and PEPs lists.

Conclusion

The question of which Jumio alternative is the right fit for your company does not have a one-size-fits-all answer. To assess whether one of the above is a good choice, you will need to think about your current and future needs, at least in the short term.

Don’t forget to also consider your legal mandates, if any in your sector. You may also want to take into account the pricing of each, as well as how it affects the customer journey.

Sometimes, the perfect setup takes on the form of an ID verification and fraud prevention stack, where more than one solution work in tandem to filter out unsuitable customers and bad actors before biometrics or document verification kick in, providing better protection and helping you save up on costs.

Jumio Alternatives FAQ

What cheaper alternatives are there to Jumio?

Although Jumio pricing is not transparent so it’s hard to compare, biometric and video verification is costly. Ensure you understand well your compliance requirements and see if you can make use of a lightweight solution that doesn’t entail this. Sometimes, such an approach can dramatically save costs.
